"The Chain of Destiny" was originally published in 1875 as a serial in The Shamrock an Irish weekly magazine that specialized in serial fiction. The story appeared in four issues of The Shamrock with the first installation appearing on May 1, 1875 and the last on May 22, 1875. It was first published in book form in October 1981 in the short story collection Shades of Dracula: Uncollected Stories of Bram Stoker by HarperCollins Distribution Services.
